During construction, the Zentralstadion was built on 1.5 million tons of war wreckage - a third of Leipzig's entire wartime waste. In September 1956, a German attendance record was set at the GDR Oberliga match between SC Rotation Leipzig and SC Lokomotive Leipzig, when 100,000 spectators visited the Zentralstadion. In 1977, it was extensively renovated for the last time and floodlights were added. After reunification, it served as the home ground for VfB Leipzig's Bundesliga home games. It was closed in 1994 due to its dilapidation and finally demolished in 2000. In 2004, the “new Zentralstadion” was built for the 2006 World Cup, where RB Leipzig now plays its home games.
