With the Treaty of Versailles, the city of Cologne and its mayor Konrad Adenauer had a largely unused green strip on the outskirts of the city on the left bank of the Rhine. A sports park was subsequently built in Cologne Müngersdorf and the Müngersdorfer Stadium was built at its center. The "Sportpark Müngersdorf" was the largest German sports facility until the construction of the Berlin Olympic Stadium in 1936.
The Müngersdorfer Stadium was demolished twice and a new stadium was built on the same site (1975 and 2004) in order to meet the regulations and requirements of a modern sports facility. In the last new building, the athletics facility was removed and the Müngersdorfer Stadium became a pure football stadium for 1. FC Köln.
