On the site of a former brickworks, architect Charles Swain designed Maine Road along the lines of Glasgow's “Hampden Park”. The record attendance of 84,569 spectators was set in 1934 during Manchester City's home win against Stoke City. It was once the largest stadium in the north of England and twice hosted the England national team at Maine Road. Following Manchester City's move to the new Etihad Stadium in 2003, Maine Road was demolished and replaced by a housing estate.
