When it opened in 1913, the Highbury only had one grandstand and terraced standing areas. The Highbury was not extensively rebuilt and expanded until 1932 and remained almost unchanged for the next 50 years until it was extensively renovated in the early 1990s. Only the north stand had to be replaced after World War II as it had been badly damaged. Over the decades, the Highbury was occasionally used by the English national team, such as the legendary "Battle of Highbury", when the English national team defeated the reigning world champions Italy 3-2 in 1934. After its closure, the Highbury was largely demolished and 700 apartments were built. The listed east stand was incorporated into the new building.
