The new main stand - under which the city highway ran - was actually supposed to be demolished immediately after its completion: according to the authorities, there was no building permit.
Atletico managed to prevent this, but the stadium was never completely closed. The striking main stand and the U-shaped stand remained. In its almost 50-year history, it was renovated twice, and after the renovation in 1971, it was given the final name of the club president at the time: Vicente Calderón.
